What can I give my cat for stiff joints?

Cats lack an enzyme system in the liver to process most NSAIDs, and are extremely prone to toxicity from them. Aspirin, when used, must be used at low doses. It’s usually given only every 72 hours, even then, toxicity can still occur. Some cats do not tolerate aspirin, and large numbers of cats get no clinical benefit. Meloxicam was once used as safe for cats until large numbers of adverse reactions were reported. NSAIDs aren’t very practical for use in feline arthritis.

Overweight cats suffer more arthritis symptoms, so weight management should be a part of any arthritis management. Physical therapy like range-of-motion exercises, muscle-strengthening activities and gentle massage, may be helpful. GLME, Omega-3 (fish oil) supplements can also be used. Dietary supplements such as glucosamine are also helpful.

NSAIDs are not frequently used in cats but some painkillers are considered safe. In particular, buprenorphine is often effective. It is administered as a liquid onto the gums it is absorbed directly without being swallowed and can bring significant relief. Some cats do well with tramadol.

Some cats receive steroids such as prednisolone to treat arthritis. Long-term use of steroids is not recommended at all. Although steroids can lead to significant side effects in cats, some felines can tolerate these drugs for a short time. As long as the drugs used are designed for felines, human drugs or dog medication can be fatal sometimes. Always consult the vet before starting any drugs or therapy for your cats.
